Katrina

On August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded New Orleans and washed away much of the Big Easy’s deep cultural history. Many people – Black Indians included – say that this unique culture is in jeopardy of fading away.  The hurricane has forced many Indians to move to other cities, and they find it difficult to continue their tradition outside of New Orleans.  Over 4500 public housing units are being destroyed this year, with some rents nearly four times their pre-Katrina levels – making it difficult for those who still live in New Orleans to stay.  New Orleans has reclaimed its spot as the murder capital of the US, with 209 homicides in 2007.  These themes are reflected in some of the Indians’ suits as they struggle to keep their tradition alive and to pass it on to the next generation.
